Daring Color "Mingling not Mixing" |
The book is finally finished! As some of you may know I was lucky to get a contract to do a book for North Light Books, F+W
Publications, Cincinnati Ohio. North Light is the largest publisher of "how to" books on the market.
They publish the books and distribute and market them to all of the large book stores and art stores
in the United States Europe and Australia.
North Light also has a book club with thousands of members. My book Daring Color
"Mingling not Mixing" will be the main book selection to the North Light book club in August
and will be available at all of your major book stores as well as Amazon.com.
Doing the book was a major job, I did all of the art, photography and text. I had to make one of
the guest rooms into a dark room and become familiar with all of the electronics on the camera that
I hate. I took my slides to one finisher to maintain color control and did 6 slides for every shot
taken. There are more than 20 step by steps in the book. With deadlines and such I got up every
morning and started at 9 am and worked through to 5 in the afternoon. There were many, many friends
who helped me through this: Bob Freeman, my partner in life, was a major contributor (every time
I wanted to throw the computer over the balcony he worked it out for me),
Anne Terhardt, Sharon Davie, and Delores Pastorius baby-sat me - they reminded me of deadlines
picked up paintings for shows and delivered them, I will be forever grateful to them.
Jack Nolan helped me out with drawings and ideas.
Over my years of teaching many times my students would say "there is a book here" never would
I have believed that I would get this opportunity. Having a book was only a dream and I thank
North Light for the their help in doing this. Especially Jamie Markle Editor in Chief and my
editor Kelly Messerley.
I know how many great artists around this country and I know that I am one of the lucky ones to
have a book coming out.

Watercolor is the most popular painting medium and there are few books dedicated to color mingling directly on the paper
Mingling color is a very desirable technique because it creates interesting textures and colors without the application of many layers (also known as glazing)
The technique is fast; no layering of paint is required, so readers will see the results right away
With 8 technique-driven mini demos and 16 painting demonstrations, Daring Color will help readers master the techniques of mixing and mingling color in the real-life context of a painting. Readers will learn how to avoid common color-mixing mistakes, how to combine colors successfully in a painting, and how to make even their shadows glow with color and light.
